[UNDERGOING CONSTANT CONSTRUCTION]

               you see its something
          like this
          you become sensitive
          & listen
          & you get sick discovering
          so many unhappy people
          & so you think
          if i had some money
          i could print some
          lovely poems
          & people might slow down
          & read them
& so you send a telepathic?
          will power? prayer?
          for money
& the angels say “fuck you”

          ...

          now poetry is business
          & now the revolution!
          is turning on to art,
& the full efforts of the
          revolution will be to
          save the word motherfucker
          from extinction…
          & it doesnt matter where
          you’re consciousness is,
          the people in power
          have needs so great
          they’ll kill you to express
          their inability to become
          human ——

          ...

          you see, its something like
          this - everytime i write a
poem - im afraid - when
          i’m dead it will sell
          & some other poet will
          starve because no one will
          buy his poems
          & i’m afraid
          that someday people will
          all read poetry
& not try to live it

          ...

          & poetry should not
be just for poets ————— the
          people who make guns do
          not go hungry.

         Think about your publishing
         family. Bookstore people
         are your family. People that
         organize book fairs and zine
         fests are your publishing
         family. Other publishers are
         your family. People who follow
         your work...are your family.
         Printers and binderies are your
         family. The postal workers

and that you know by name
are your family. The person who

         family... Your family is
         your family, particularly if
         they value and support your

We are in transition, like a blinking text cursor.

[A]dvantages of the industrial publishing system are always relative, misleading, or false, reflect[ing] the privileged reality of a minority or an elite.

Where [the industrial publishing system] fosters division (between writing and publishing, text and book, publishing and manufacturing), there it is necessary to restore or (re)build links that give grounds for a productive and political continuity.

Once a certain point is reached, there is no possible return [from the industrial publishing system].

Where the industrial book ends, the possibility of the artisan book is born.

Artisan publishing is the publication of texts with the body.

Discover all that can be done with very little

[T]ranscend self-publication...in order to shape a[n interconnected] community

[The collapse of the industrial publishing system] is the goal to reach.

Allow...untethered circulation...of the book.

Share and teach your skills.

- Eric Schierloh, translated by Eric Schierloh and Paul Holzman, How to Prepare Yourself for the Collapse of the Industrial Publishing System

As an everyday person walking around
with some knowledge of how advertising
and propaganda work, I look out there
and get disgusted and amazed
by the blatant manipulation…

As I was laying out Crap Hound #4,
I realized images of Ronald McDonald
are set up to look exactly like Jesus.
I’m up in the middle of the night laughing
and I want other people to laugh -
to see it for what it is.

You can learn to see through bullshit.

Handwork is the main quality.
I wanted to create something that was
not disposable—something that people
would keep and show to their friends. …

When I wanted to have a real x-ray cover,
I went to a metal-reclaiming junkyard,
dug through all these bins and managed
to pick out a few hundred x-rays.

Zine-reading is a good way to avoid
commercial culture. As all the media outlets
conglomerate, I think people are figuring out
the necessity to “do it themselves”. …

I love it—I love the fact that I know people
who do things like this.

Given that people make a zine for public
consumption, there’s the problem of how
it gets out—not necessarily to a wide audience,
but to any audience. …

Just as most people who consume poetry
are poets themselves, most people who consume
fanzines are zine editors.

With most fanzines, the editors don’t make a living.
They might get some fringe benefits like free records
to review or other zines in trade, but the publication
does not pay the rent or put food in their bellies.
What excites me is trying to break through,
and make interesting things available and accessible.

We have to develop, build and nurture
genuine alternatives—politically, culturally,
and in terms of organization. …
We have to do this, and fund this, ourselves.

I see five billion people involved
in the publication of a magazine.
… —let me put it this way:
if you’ve heard of Indra’s Web,
the world is a vast web, everything.
It is interconnected, and at every
   interstice, there is a bell,
and if I tug here, well, the bells
are going to ring all over the world.
   That’s how I see publishing.

It’s the combination of all of our experiences
that creates the richness of the zine.

I think the fact that our sexuality
is just there is “political”.
We present just honest portrayals.

It’s a labor of love—anal love!

There seems to be a chasm
      between those of us
(of whom I think there are many)
who live our lives with values
      that are spiritual and
      community-minded and people-
      orientated, even animal-
      orientated — just life-orientated;
and those of us who seem
to have some kind of obsession
      with this thing called money,
which hardly even exists to me.
I mean it’s very hard to say
hello to it, embrace it. ...
      I’m very careful with
the little bit of money I have,
but I don’t really care about it.
I think that’s the small press
      attitude.

cleveland i gave you
most of my words & my time
and you laughed
told me to get a job
- like washing dishes?
for $40, a week? -
because my highschool diploma
wasnt worth a good shit
and the sun never rose

and the daylight breaking
rainbows on the wet
oriental manhole covers
wasnt worth the time or money
to write about
except on Sundays
when you counldnt get a drink
& wipe-out the wasted days piled up like
dead flowers

...

you never noticed
that we are all
only kept alive by dreams
& even the small dreams of cleveland
are slowly murdered by the
narrow reality that surrounds
& devours them

Tell Me Again
reality is money
and i will slice open
your blood-stained reality
and SCREAM
that i and my brothers
know 1,000 doors in and out
of your reality

tell me about your reality
and ill tell *you
i do not believe in death
and i spend my days in
amazement - wondering at your
callousness & your wide-open
hypocrisy -

cleveland, i gave you
the poems that no one ever
wrote about you
and you gave me
NOTHING

not that i
ever wanted much
a place to write
some printing materials
so i could take my time
& write beautiful poems
& study
but you laughed

& when i got sick
& couldnt afford a doctor
you looked the other way

you told me
i couldnt experiment with words
had to understand the rules
of the game - - get credentials

i watched my teeth rot
& laughed

what could your schools teach me?
how to be a bad poet? After
paying out $5,000. . .
or perhaps
after a scholarship brainwashing
i could sit on my ass
& write to an audience
i helped to murder
with dead poems
safe poems

...

cleveland i gave you
poems that no one else had time
to write
& you arrested me

AND I DONT EVEN CARE

in the days unborn
you will find my brothers
ARMED with words you havent
even dreamed of.

Cleveland
you will move
or be plowed over -
eaten by vultures
like a corpse
digested
& slowly
change. . .
